The TRNC is an independent secular republic with a democratic governmental system based on the principles of social justice and the rule of law. The 1985 Constitution provides for a semi-presidential system with a president as the head of state. The political structure is comprised from independent executive (a council of ministers composed of prime minister and 10 ministers), legislative (Legislative Assembly, composed of 50 deputies) and judicial (independent courts) bodies elected or appointed.
North Cyprus Political Bodies
Head of State:
The head of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is a president, elected directly for a five-year term.
The first president of the TRNC was its founder, Rauf R. Denktaş, since the declaration of independence in 1983.
The current president of North Cyprus is Mehmet Ali Talat. He was inaugurated as head of the country on the 25th of April, 2005.
Government:
Council of Ministers, appointed by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister. The current Prime Minister is Ferdi Sabit Soyer.
Legislature:
Unicameral Legislative Assembly of 50 members, elected for a five-year term elected by proportional representation from five electoral districts (the current House Speaker is Fatma Ekenoglu).
Judicial Power:
- Supreme Court - The highest court in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Supreme Court functions as the Constitutional Court, the Court of Appeal and the High Administrative Court.
- Subordinate Courts - Judicial power other than that exercised by the Supreme Court is exercised by the Assize Courts, District Courts and Family Courts.
- Supreme Court of Judicature - Responsible for the appointment, promotion, and matters relating to the discipline of all judges. It is composed of the president and judges of the Supreme Court, a member appointed by the President of the TRNC, a member appointed by the Legislative Assembly, the Attorney-General and a member elected by the Bar Association.
