Turkish Language in Turkey and North Cyprus Tourist Dictionary
The Turkish language (Turkish: Türkçe) is the official language of North Cyprus. It is a member of the Turkish family of languages, which is considered to be a part of an Altaic language family.
Turkish is spoken in Turkey, Northern Cyprus, and by minorities in 35 other countries. In particular, Turkish is used in countries that formerly belonged to the Ottoman Empire, such as Bulgaria, Romania, the former Yugoslavia, the Republic of Macedonia, and Greece.
Until 1928, Turkish was written in a modified version of the Arabic alphabet. The Arabic alphabet was outlawed after Kemal Atatürk, as part of his efforts to modernize Turkey, introduced a modified version of Latin alphabet, which has been used till now in written Turkish.
Like Finnish and Hungarian, Turkish has vowel harmony, is agglutinative and has no grammatical gender. The basic word order is subject-object-verb. Second-person plural forms can be used for individuals as a sign of respect.
