Secondary Education in North Cyprus

Secondary education follows directly after primary education and is provided at middle and high schools for teenagers at the age between 12 and 17. Children in secondary schools are prepared for higher or vocational training. Vocational training in North Cyprus is considered to be a part of secondary education.

Secondary education is provided at two stages in Northern Cyprus:

• First Stage (Secondary Junior / Middle School) lasts for three years. Children at the age between 12 and 14 follow this program. Education at this stage is free and compulsory, provided by "orta okulu" - middle schools.
• The second stage (Secondary Senior) is designed for the children of 15-17 age-group and has a 3-year programme of instruction. It is provided by senior high schools including colleges, lyceums and vocational schools. The technical and vocational schools are comprised of commercial lyceums, where teenagers can get whether technical, agricultural training, as well as learn nursing, tourism, hotel management, catering, etc.

Children can finish secondary education at the age of 14 graduating from "orta" (middle school), however, it is more useful for them to continue studies until the end of senior high school, till they are 17. After that they can be ready to get the higher education at the university.
