The core of North Cyprus television broadcasting is Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation (BRT) or simply Bayrak (Bayrak Radyo Televizyon Kurumu).
BRT was founded in 1963 as a decision of the Turkish Cypriot community to have their own radio station. Bayrak Radio was broadcasting in Turkish, English and Greek on a single channel until 1966. Soon it started broadcasting on two channels. In 1976, after the establishment of a small TV studio in Nicosia, the name of Bayrak Radio was changed to Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation. The transmission went to colour in 1979. In 1983 it began transmitting in FM Radio stereo. BRT has been autonomous since 1983.
Today BRTK broadcasts various programmes including daily news in Turkish, English and Greek, sports, arts, debates, women's hour, as well as educational and entertainment programmes, on TV and radio. Television transmission covers all the territory of Cyprus, southern Turkey, Lebanon and western Syria.
Most news reports transmitted from Bayrak are provided by the Turkish News Agency - Cyprus (TAK).
Satellite and cable television is widespread in the TRNC. Satellite channels broadcast programmes from different countries. One of the examples of digital broadcasting is Digiturk with numerous channels and radio stations. Digiturk broadcasts via satellite.
